Hair loss has a significant impact on the self-confidence of both men and women. Over time, those affected often find that their appearance becomes an increasing source of dissatisfaction.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has proven to be one of the safest and most effective methods of treating hair loss and restoring hair to its natural appearance.

While the decision may seem like a big one, the treatment is usually painless and without complications. It is considered minimally invasive and low risk, making it a very good choice for those who want to regain their hair permanently.

The following are the answers to the most frequently asked questions by our patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a FUE Hair Transplantation?

It is a process in which hair is taken from the back of the head and then transplanted into thinning or bald areas. This method allows for the re-implantation of your own hair. Healthy hair follicles are used to reconstruct decreasing hair density in a meticulously performed procedure.

How is Hair Transplantation done with the FUE Method?

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method involves extracting individual hair follicles from the donor area, typically the back and sides of the head, using a motorized micro-punch device. These follicular units, containing 1-3 hairs each, are removed in the natural direction of hair growth.

Once extracted, the hair follicles are stored temporarily in a special solution to maintain their vitality. The surgeon then creates tiny incisions in the recipient area using customized sapphire blades tailored to the patient’s specific needs.

The stored hair follicles are carefully implanted into the micro-channels, ensuring a natural hair pattern. After all the grafts are placed, the donor area is bandaged for 24 hours to aid healing.

This advanced technique leaves no visible scars and delivers natural-looking results tailored to the patient's hairline and density preferences.

What are the advantages of the FUE method?

  • The FUE technique leaves no scars, the donor site does not need stitches and heals on the same day.

  • Leaving a natural and aesthetically pleasing result.

  • It’s pain-free and effective.

  • FUE is the safest and most advanced hair transplant procedure available.

Are there age limits for a hair transplant?

To book a hair transplant, you must be over 18 years old. However, it is also advisable not to have a transplant until the age of 25. This is because the hairline can change between the ages of 18 and 25, meaning that further treatment may be required as the ageing process progresses.

In principle, hair transplant procedures can be performed on anyone over the age of 18, as long as you are generally healthy and don't have any complex medical conditions.

When is a Hair Transplant Not Possible?

A hair transplant may not be suitable in the following cases:

No Donor Hair Available: If a person is completely bald and there are no viable hair follicles left in the donor area (typically the back or sides of the head), a hair transplant may not be feasible. The success of the procedure relies on having enough healthy hair follicles to transplant.

Severe Health Issues or Medical Conditions: Individuals with significant health problems or untreated medical conditions, such as autoimmune diseases or chronic infections, may not be eligible for a hair transplant. These conditions can complicate both the procedure and the healing process.

If you are unsure whether a hair transplant is the right option for you, we offer personalized consultations. Our experienced team will conduct a thorough assessment of your hair condition, listen to your concerns, and discuss the most suitable treatment options for your needs.

Post-Treatment Care & Recovery

Recovery after a hair transplant is a critical phase to ensure the best results. Here are some essential points to keep in mind:

Follow Post-Operative Instructions:

Adhere to the aftercare instructions provided by your doctor, which may include specific guidelines for washing your hair, avoiding direct sunlight, and preventing any irritation to the transplanted area.

Avoid Touching the Transplanted Area: Avoid touching, scratching, or rubbing the transplanted area, as this can disturb the grafts and affect the healing process.

Sleep Position: Sleep with your head elevated for the first few days to reduce swelling and protect the transplanted area. Using a special neck pillow might also help to keep your head in the right position.

Avoid Physical Activity: Refrain from intense physical activities, exercise, and heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks to prevent excessive sweating and strain on the healing area.

Manage Scabs and Swelling: It’s normal to experience some swelling and scabbing after the procedure. Don’t try to remove the scabs prematurely; let them fall off naturally. Applying prescribed ointments or solutions may help with healing and comfort.

Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect your scalp from direct sunlight for several weeks after the transplant. Wearing a loose hat or using a sunscreen recommended by your doctor is crucial to avoid any damage to the healing skin.

Be Patient: Hair growth will not be immediate, and it may take several months before you notice visible results. It’s important to stay patient and allow your hair to grow naturally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is post-operative care important?

It is important to follow the post-operative instructions carefully

After your procedure, you'll receive a post-operative care kit with everything you need to ensure the best possible aftercare.

We'll also provide all the necessary advice for proper post-operative care to ensure maximum results following your hair transplant.

After surgery, taking good care of yourself is crucial. We'll ensure you have everything you need to feel comfortable and promote a smooth healing process.

After my treatment, what will I need to do?

Please note that any negative effects are only temporary and that the new and improved appearance that you will get after the procedure will be permanent.

After an FUE treatment, you can resume your normal daily routine right away. However, you must be extremely careful for the first two days to prevent post-operative bleeding.

  • To limit the swelling, avoid physical exertion for a few days and make sure not to bend forwards or backwards. Try to keep your upper body or head as upright as possible.

  • Special care should also be taken when sleeping! We recommend the use of neck pillows with some cushions to keep the head upright and in a semi-upright position. The healing process of the connective tissue takes about 5-6 days. Afterwards, there is almost no risk of accidentally removing the grafts

  • Additionally, regularly applying a cool pack after treatment can help ease the swelling. Please only cool the forehead or eyes, never the area where the transplant was performed.

  • Protect your head from the sun.

  • Remember to drink plenty of water.

  • Avoid touching the transplanted areas and any contact in this area. Otherwise, the grafts may fall out.

  • Keep your hair and scalp healthy by being gentle.

  • Extreme caution is required when putting on or taking off clothing, especially during the first few days.

  • Try to limit smoking

  • Stop drinking alcohol

When can I have a shower after my operation?

Patients can have a shower right after a hair transplant procedure but they are advised to keep their scalp dry. There should be no steam whilst showering and please refrain from taking too long or too hot baths.

  • 48 hours after treatment, the first hair care is carried out in the hospital.

Why am I experiencing itching after my hair transplant?

After a hair transplant, you might have an itchy scalp. An itchy head is a signal that the area is undergoing the natural healing process after the procedure and is completely normal. The itchy feeling will go away by itself. It is extremely important that you don't scratch your head, as this could affect your recovery and damage the hair grafts that have just been transplanted.

Why does my donor area feel like it's burning after my hair transplant?

Due to the micro-wounds in the donor area, you may experience a burning sensation during the healing process. However, there is no cause for concern, as this is a natural part of the healing process.

After your treatment, you will receive a follow-up kit with everything you need to ensure the best possible aftercare.

How should I treat scabbing after hair transplant surgery?

During a hair transplant, tiny incisions are made in the scalp to insert the hair follicles. Immediately after surgery, the human immune system begins to close the small wounds on the scalp. The crust that forms is also a protection against dirt and dust. The healing process continues under the crust, which is why the crust must remain on the scalp for a period of time. To ensure that this healing process runs smoothly, patients who have undergone a hair transplant should follow certain rules and guidelines.

Who can resist the temptation to touch the scab of a wound and help it come off with your fingers?

This temptation must be resisted in any case after a hair transplant, even if it itches from time to time. Especially in the first few days after the hair transplant, the grafts are not yet attached to the scalp and would be removed together with the crusts.Later, after about 4 to 6 weeks, the grafts will fall out on their own, but by then the important hair dermal papilla, located at the bottom of the hair follicle, will have taken root in the scalp. The Hair dermal papilla cells are responsible for hair growth, formation and cycling.

Will the crusts come off on their own after the surgery?

  • 48 hours after treatment, the first hair care is carried out in the hospital.

  • Starting from the third day after treatment, it is recommended that you wash your hair daily. Incidentally, this also helps very well against any itching that may occur.

  • The donor area of the scalp also requires care, of course, but shampoo is sufficient here and a little rubbing is allowed.

  • Before the 10th day it is recommended not to remove the scabs!

  • 10 days after surgery, it is advised to start carefully removing the scabs by washing and carefully massaging your hair.

  • Leave the crusts that do not want to come off until the 2nd week to allow the skin underneath to regenerate over time. Patiently wait until the remaining crusts fall off by themselves or with a massage after the 15t-16th day. In order to ensure the success of the hair transplant, the scabs must be very carefully completely removed by the 15th -16th day after the surgery.

I have lost some grafts with the scabs, is this normal?

In some cases together with the hair. Don’t worry please, this is no cause for concern, you will see that new fine hairs begin to grow after a short time.

I am experiencing facial edema. Is this a cause for concern?

The swelling of the forehead caused by the local anaesthetic and scalp injection is a normal side effect and will resolve on its own within a few days. The worst swelling may occur on the face between the second and fourth day after treatment.

Why do I lose my hair after the surgery?

Your transplanted hair may fall after 2-6 weeks because of the low oxygen transportation in your new channels. This is a usual thing to experience. Grafts will produce new hair in approximately 12-16 weeks.

How long does it take to recover from hair transplant surgery and when is it possible to return to work after surgery?

Returning to work after the surgery should generally not be problematic. Some people return to light work 2-3 days after surgery, although most people prefer to take a week off after surgery. Due to the possibility of swelling and some crusting after surgery. The crusts usually fall off 7-10 days after surgery. You'll be asked to sleep with your head up with a neck pillow for the first few days after surgery, and some people may feel tired. Fortunately, this gets better day by day.

For how long will the effects of hair transplant surgery be visible?

Usually, within 15 days after the surgery, it will no longer be apparent that you had a FUE treatment. Redness of the scalp may occur for a longer period after surgery, especially in patients with highly sensitive skin.

Is it not possible to do most types of sports at all for the first 2 months after the operation?

Please refrain from engaging in any sports activities, including running, cycling, football, golf, and basketball, for a minimum of 1 month after undergoing your surgical procedure. Additionally, it is recommended that you avoid heavy lifting, sweat-inducing training and vigorous physical activities for 2 months after the operation. It is also advisable to abstain from activities such as sauna, sunbathing, and solarium for a period of 3 months after the surgery. High temperatures and humidity are not helpful for healing. It's best to avoid them.

  • Most important is that you do not hit your head in the early stages, which is why sports is not recommended too soon.

Can I use Minoxidil after my hair transplant?

It is strongly recommended that you stop using Minoxidil (Rogaine) from the day of surgery until 2 weeks after the procedure.

Procedure & Treatment Process

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the hair transplant treatment take?

A hair transplant procedure typically takes between four and eight hours.

Is there any pain during hair transplant surgery?

Hair transplants are typically performed using a local anaesthetic, which ensures a painless procedure from start to finish. The process is primarily pain-free.

However, some might feel a tiny amount of discomfort when the anaesthetic is initially injected.

Most people say they feel a bit of pressure or pulling during the procedure, but not any pain.

In addition, many of the patients get bored during the treatment and most of them fall asleep.

Do you want to be under light sedation before undergoing your hair treatment?

Local Anesthesia with a "Needle" also makes some people very uncomfortable, mostly those with a "Needle Phobia". In this case, the patient needs to be sedated before the local anesthesia.

If you wish, we can give you a medication that has a calming effect on the nervous system to relieve symptoms of anxiety and stress. You will initially feel relaxed and drowsy, but will still be conscious and able to respond to the doctor's instructions.

Can there be any complications with hair transplant surgery?

Hair transplant surgery is generally safe with minimal complications. Our transplant surgeon and team is knowledgeable in identifying and preventing complications, as well as managing them if they do arise. Proper surgical techniques and post-operative wound management can significantly reduce the risk of complications. Effective planning for surgery involves a detailed consultation with the patient before surgery, which minimises the risk of patient dissatisfaction. Our main aim is to guarantee the best possible results for everyone.

How will the frontal hairline be restored?

Restoring the frontal hairline naturally provides a dramatic enhancement to the overall appearance, as it is the most visually critical part of the hair. Hair transplant specialists carefully consider these details during the procedure to ensure optimal results.

Creating a Natural Hairline:

  • A balance is crucial: a hairline that is too low looks as unnatural as one that is too high.

  • To achieve a natural appearance, the hairline must maintain a specific distance from the forehead muscles, typically around one centimeter.

  • Grafts cannot be implanted directly into the forehead muscle, which sets a limit on how far the hairline can be lowered.

This careful planning ensures that the restored hairline blends seamlessly with the patient’s facial features, creating a harmonious and natural look

How will the direction of my hair growth be after the hair transplant?

The direction of newly implanted hair will be the same as the direction of your existing hair, resulting in a natural appearance. It is important to consider both the quantity of re-implanted hair follicles, as well as achieving a natural hairline and growth direction.

Is it possible to use body hair for hair restoration?

Body hair is not suitable for a hair transplant as it differs in structure from that of the hair follicles. In exceptional cases, we only use beard hair only in the crown area if there are not enough donor hairs available to increase the hair density in this area.

Results & Expectations

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the results of a hair transplantation procedure long-lasting?

Transplanted hair won't be lost after hair transplantation. This is due to the usage of follicles from the back and sides of the head, which are not at risk of falling out and are not affected by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can cause hair loss. So it's possible that the hair will be there for the rest of your life. The hair on the top of the head can all be lost due to the DHT hormone, which is why only hair from the back of the head is used for hair transplants.

You may need another procedure later if you continue to lose your own hair or decide you want thicker hair.

How many hair transplant sessions are required for optimal results?

In most cases, one hair transplant procedure should suffice for patients to achieve satisfactory results.

The surgeon will give a precise evaluation of necessary procedures depending on how much hair you have lost, your age, and how good your donor area is. While some may just need one treatment and medication to stop further hair loss, others may require more treatments as medication is not a solution. The transplanted hair will last forever but the rest of the hair may still fall out over time. You may need another procedure if you continue to lose your own hair or want thicker hair.

How long will it take to see my hair transplant results ?

Hair transplants take time to show results, and you need to be patient. The complete outcome of the transplant may take 12-18 months.

You may experience some hair loss prior to this time. It's important not to be disappointed before you've given your hair enough time to regrow.

When should I have my second hair transplant?

Following your first hair transplant, you should wait 12 to 18 months to see the final results. If the desired outcome is not achieved with one procedure, additional sessions may be necessary.

The maximum number of sessions depends on the number of donor hairs available.

Will it be possible to style my transplanted hair like I would normally?

After six months of recovery, you may cut, style, or even colour your hair as desired, as the transplanted hair will be your own natural hair.

What factors can affect hair transplant results?

The longevity of a hair transplant may be influenced by factors such as the patient's hair type, lifestyle, age, and the degree of hair loss.

  • Growth may be reduced due to heavy smoking, diabetes, excessive sun exposure on the scalp or individual anatomical characteristics.

  • The expertise and skill of the surgeon.

  • Unhealthy diet.

  • How your body responds to the transplant - sometimes the transplants do not engraft properly.

  • Stress

For an optimal recovery and to ensure a successful treatment result, we kindly ask you to follow our post-operative guidelines we provide.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

Frequently Asked Questions

Clothing during and after the treatment

During and for some time after the treatment, patients should wear comfortable clothing that is easy to open and does not need to be pulled over the head - this is essential for their comfort and well being.

Hair Transplants On Scars

Transplantation to scar tissue can help people regain confidence by reducing the visibility of scars, as new hair growth makes scars look much more natural and less visible.

Whatever the cause of hair loss, hair transplantation is a versatile procedure that can be tailored to the needs of the individual. If one of those needs is a transplant on a scar - it can be done very successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to get a hair transplant in any type of scar tissue?

Yes, hair transplants can be an effective solution for restoring hair in areas affected by scars from burns, surgeries, or anything else that has caused a scar. It is a procedure that can benefit anyone who is experiencing hair loss due to a variety of reasons, not just genetic factors.

Why doesn't hair grow on scars?

Hair doesn't grow on scars because the tissue is dense and doesn't have the structures needed for hair growth. It's also often less supplied with blood, which can also impair hair growth. As a result, the affected area usually remains hairless.

What is the success rate of hair transplant on scars?

With the right treatment, up to 60-90% of newly transplanted hair will grow back for life, depending on the type of scar. The rate of growth depends on the thickness of the scar, which can sometimes be too thick or too thin. In order to stimulate blood flow to the scar, techniques are used to increase blood flow, which also supports and increases the rate of regrowth.

Key factors influencing success include:

Scar Type: Softer scars typically respond better than tougher, thicker ones.

Hair Quality: The characteristics of the donor hair can impact the outcome.

Surgical Technique: Methods like FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) can be more effective for scarred areas.

Post-Procedure Care: Following aftercare instructions can significantly affect healing and growth.

Recovery After Hair Transplantation On Scars

Hair transplantation on scar tissue requires a slightly different healing process compared to regular hair transplants. Since scar tissue has a lower blood supply, extra care is needed to promote proper healing and hair growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to recover after a hair transplant on scars?

  • Initial Healing: The transplanted area may experience mild redness, swelling, and scabbing for the first 7-10 days.

  • Blood Circulation Improvement: Since scars have reduced blood flow, treatments such as PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy or microneedling may be recommended to enhance healing.

  • Growth Phase: Transplanted hair may shed within the first few weeks (shock loss) before new hair starts to grow, which typically happens within 3-6 months.

  • Final Results: Full hair growth in scarred areas may take up to 12 months due to slower follicle adaptation in scar tissue.

How to Care for the Transplanted Area?

  • Follow Post-Procedure Instructions: Proper cleansing and medication usage are essential to prevent infection and promote healing.

  • Avoid Pressure on the Area: Scarred skin is more delicate, so avoid scratching, rubbing, or applying excessive tension.

  • Use Recommended Treatments: Additional therapies, such as PRP or gentle massages, may be advised to improve blood circulation.

  • Be Patient: Hair growth on scar tissue takes longer, but with proper care, the results can be long-lasting.
